The Handless Maiden: Workshop-Presentation

June 19, 2019 @ 3:30 am - 5:00 pm

Tempest Flute Ensemble, in cooperation with Indie Opera Week, will give a presentation of selections from “The Handless Maiden”, a new chamber opera by composer Benton Roark and librettist Katherine Koller. This performance is the culmination of an intensive three-day workshop, with the aim of moving towards a fully staged production in 2020. Conceived for five singers, chamber ensemble, and spatialized, eight-piece flute ensemble, The Handless Maiden is a story of empowerment, of discovering one’s own strengths despite disfigurement, banishment and loss, and is set in the wild — a mythic “present” where times and places run in confluence with one another.

This project is the recipient of generous support from the Canada Council for the Arts, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the Edmonton Arts Council. Teiya Kasahara appears thanks to special assistance from the Queer Arts Festival.

The Handless Maiden features:

Teiya Kasahara, soprano
